Calories.... what the heck are they.



I spoke about the nutritional pyramid and adherence last week so this week here is some info on calories. Your favourite.... right?


Calories are NOT tiny creatures that live in your wardrobe and sew your clothes a little bit tighter every night. That is a myth. Really.... it is. Have you ever seen any evidence of these creatures? Left behind needles, threads or thimbles? Nope!


But seriously.


Calories are simply units of energy. You take them into your body by eating and drinking then you need to use them for stuff. Once the body has used them for what it needs to do then the rest are stored. This post shows you how many calories are in the different types of food and drink you ingest so I hope it helps you to see where more calories can come in and understand that they are not scary at all.


You don't need to count calories to lose weight either but it helps to understand them.


To encourage a healthy weight without calorie counting, I highly recommend (in no particular order) that you:

  • Choose whole foods more often.

  • Eat a wide variety of plant foods.

  • Get enough protein.

  • Eat plenty of tolerable fibre.

  • Limit highly processed foods.

  • Be mindful of portion sizes.

  • Stay hydrated.

  • Sleep well.

  • Also - have regular meal times. That's a top tip.

In addition to this I would love you to understand that when I say "healthy weight" this may not be the weight you believe to be best for yourself.


Weight doesn't correlate directly to health and so working on eating well and adjusting your mindset will help you to thrive rather than just survive on crazy fad diets.
