It is estimated that around 1.25 million people in the UK have an eating disorder. Of that 1.25 million, 22% of them have Binge Eating Disorder. I am talking about this particular disorder today as it is who I primarily work with. However, did you know that this number might be a low estimate as many fall under the radar as they are not aware they have any disorder. Many fall under the radar due to weight stigma not only with the general public but even among doctors and clinicians. Yes, those people who are supposed to be there to help us can overlook our real issues as they judge us based on how we look or our weight. This is a problem for people of all shapes and sizes, they often won't get a correct diagnosis or treatment for a presenting problem simply because they have been judged before they talk. I have worked with so many people who have struggled with illness or injury and those who have medical complications which have been dismissed with one comment like "Maybe you should lose weight and see if that helps" or "You know what to do, eat less, move more" and even "Well, your weight isn't helping is it?".

This is not a good diagnosis from a GP for a person with a knee injury or any problem for that matter. THIS IS NOT OK. Considering that most people cannot control their weight, and diets generally don't work then where does that leave the patient?

Interesting to note is that many eating disorders can be kicked off with just one stray and seemingly innocuous comment.

Most doctors are not trauma informed, are completely blind to diet culture and although they may feel they are doing the best for the patient they can make the problems worse. A staggering 40-60% of people who are seeking weight loss - if assessed - would be clinically diagnosed as having Binge Eating Disorder. Now what does that tell you about our diet culture and what is actually going on in the weight loss industry? For this very reason I work with people who are struggling with multiple failed diets, issues around self esteem, perfectionism and body image. I want to lower the number of people who seek out diets and increase the number of happy, confident, self assured and healthy people in the world.
